HELLO, PARENTS!

ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A GREAT GIFT FOR YOUR CHILDREN?

*

Your children deserve a special gift, one that help them in school while also giving them great enjoyment.  Books are great gifts, especially those that teach valuable life lesson.  Books provide the opportunity not only for children to read better, but when you read a book to them, bond between parent and child deepens.  No gift is greater than a strong bond between parents and children!

Sage’s Big Adventure teaches strong life lessons, provides a wonderfully positive read, offers opportunity for good discussion, and gives you and your child the ability to strengthen your relationship.

Sage’s Big Adventureis the true-to-life story of a young, blind dog and how she adapted to her blindness while simultaneously adjusting to life in a new home with a new family. The book is an inspirational, fun-to-read story!

I thoroughly enjoyed Sage’s Big Adventure: Living with Blindness as both a parent and as a teacher. So many people can relate to Sage’s struggles, adaptations and triumphs. I found myself tearful at times, for Sage and for her caregivers, as well as laughing out-loud as Sage discovered her own path. This engaging story lends itself as a teaching tool for educators. Sage’s story could be used in the classroom by focusing on the main idea of overcoming a disability or teaching the aspect of ‘voice’ and ‘point of view’ in one’s own writing. This book connects with the pet-lover, as well as the person who cheers for the underdog. Sage and her loving cargivers are true heroes as they diverge the road of challenges with courage and determination. You will only be disappointed in this book if you don’t take the time to read it!   Lexy Harris – Parent and Educator, Casper, Wyoming

READING IS THE KEY TO LEARNING

There was a saying several years ago that is filled with truth: "Reading is fundamental."   Scientists, sociologists, and educators all agree that reading is critical to a child’s growth and success, both in school and in life.  Reading is necessary for so many things -- not just reading a book but also reading the words on a test, reading a recipe, a traffic sign, or a job application.  The better a child knows how to read, the more self-confidence s/he will have in school and in life.

Sometimes, however, it’s hard to get children to read books. Here's what one mother says about Sage's Big Adventure:

"Sage's Big Adventure is a very readable book.  It brings out sensitive experiences which children need to learn and read about.  It made my daughter ask questions, like 'I wonder how Sage feels about being blind.'  She would not put it down!  I will be using this book in my class."       Leah Merchant, Mother of 10-year-old and 3rd grade Teacher - Casper, WY

PROVIDE CHILDREN WITH BOOKS THEY ENJOY

Books make wonderful gifts, and books your children enjoy reading make the best books to give.   Sage’s Big Adventure is a book children of all ages enjoy.  Children in the 9 to 12 age enjoy reading it, and younger children love hearing the story!  And the 27 pictures in the book help them better understand the life lessons through Sage's many experiences.

“We read Sage’s story – my son Kip was so interested that we read the entire book out loud today!  It was cute hearing him explain to his father later on about Sage’s blindness.  The book really made an impact on our 4-year-old!”     Deb Nieuwenhuis – Baraboo, WI

WHAT ARE THE LIFE LESSONS IN THE BOOK?

We all know youngsters experience many tough issues in life.  Physical disabilities, bullying in school, divorce, “being different” – these situations can affect a child’s self-esteem, emotional growth, and attitude in life.  Sage’s Big Adventure speaks to many of these circumstances.  Sage is blind (disability), and therefore, she is “different” from “normal” dogs.  She is adopted by a new family and goes to live with them (change).  She has trouble adjusting to the changes in her life at first (fear), but, by the end of the book, Sage has overcome many obstacles.  Sage teaches children how to adapt to change, face challenges, and experience triumphs.  Because she is a real dog, not a make-believe storybook character, children better relate to the many experiences Sage faces.

Self-esteem, courage, determination, overcoming obstacles, disability awareness – these are all great life lessons children learn from Sage’s Big Adventure!

I LOVE ANIMALS AND WANT TO ENCOURAGE CHILDREN.  THAT’S WHY I WROTE THIS BOOK!

I’ve loved animals since I was a child growing up on a farm in Iowa.  My parents taught me a strong conservation ethic and a love for pets, that’s why I became an educator for the Bozeman, Montana Humane Society and for the Grizzly Discovery Center in West Yellowstone, Montana.  I love to see the baby bison in the springtime and hear the elk bugling in the fall!  I’ve always shared my home with a couple of dogs and cats.  Sage came to live with me in 2001.  Observing her acclimate to a new home while simultaneously going blind inspired and encouraged me.  All people, including children, need people and things which inspire them.  That’s why I wrote this story – to share my love and respect of pets with children and to encourage them as they face their own challenges in life.

READING TO YOUR CHILDREN HELPS THEM IN LIFE

Do you like to read to your children?  Children enjoy hearing a good story.  This is a book your kids will ask you to keep reading.  The book is about a dog, and many children LOVE stories about animals!  Plus, they like adventure.  Sage’s Big Adventure is filled with adventures (entertaining) and it has strong life lessons (educational).  So, when you’re reading, you’re not only entertaining children, you're helping educate them in more than one way.  And, quality time spent with your child is something neither of you will regret or forget!

“I thoroughly enjoyed Sage’s Big Adventure: Living with Blindness. So many people can relate to Sage’s struggles, adaptations and triumphs. You will only be disappointed in this book if you don’t take the time to read it!”    Lexy Harris, Parent and Educator - Casper, WY

YOUR CHILDREN WILL LOVE THIS UNIQUE BOOK ABOUT A VERY SPECIAL DOG!

Most children enjoy reading and hearing stories about dogs and other pets.  Whether there is a pet in your home or not, your children will like Sage’s story, for it’s a true-to-life story.  Sage’s Big Adventure is not just another dog book – it’s a unique story, a true-to-life, inspirational story about a blind dog and the challenges she faces and the triumphs she experiences.  And it has pictures!  More than 25 photos are found in the book, depicting Sage in many circumstances.

"Thank you for coming (to school)... I really enjoyed hearing about your book.  My favorite part of the book was the last page when Sage got home."  Courtney,  Wyoming 3rd Grader

"Thank you for coming (to school)... I learned that everybody is special no matter what.  Your book is very nice.  I thought it was interesting to know that Sage could get around the house with rugs that were laid out on the floor for her."  Samantha, Wyoming 3rd Grader

THERE’S EVEN A CHAPTER ABOUT GETTING LOST!

Has your child ever been lost, maybe in the mall, the grocery store, the neighborhood, or even the forest?  If so, you both know the fear.  If not, the concern is always there.  Everyone fears getting lost.  Now, imagine being lost and blind!  That happened to Sage, and it’s recounted in the book.  Children will hold their breath wondering what happens as Sage, blind and lost, wanders through the forest, and they will cheer at the end of the chapter when she is found by her people.  You probably will, too!

*

CHILDREN LIKE HAPPY ENDINGS!

The final chapter finds Sage at home, lying in the backyard as the sun sets.  It’s a time of reflection, for Sage and for the reader, recalling the experiences she’s had.  Reflection is a great character trait, for real people and for story characters.  Taking stock of one’s life experiences and growing in self confidence and awareness of others is another positive life lesson.  This book not has only a happy ending, but also a positive growth element, something we should all experience in our lives and encourage in our children.
