I was attracted to Gayle Irwin's book as another human who shares a home with a handicapped pet. I enjoyed meeting Sage through her gentle story and photographs. I found that Gayle has the unique sense and ability to understand and convey life through a dog’s "eyes", with all the uncompromised trust that only dogs seem to possess.   Bonnie Trapkus, Board Member Casper Humane Society – Casper, WY

I started reading Sage’s Big Adventure: Living with Blindness expecting the book to be simply a child’s book, but I was curious since I’m a dog owner. I was pleasantly surprised by the book’s content, style and tone. I found myself caught up in the character – the author’s descriptive writing style makes one want to continue reading to find out what happens next; her writing style also takes a person into the character itself and the challenging situation of being blind. Anyone who has an elderly or disabled dog will relate to Sage’s story; those who are simply dog owners with little pet medical challenges will also positively respond to the message and depth of Irwin’s story. This is not just a book for children!   Tom Barnes, Schipperke owner - LaVerne, CA

Sage's Big Adventure: Living with Blindness helps us feel a kinship with one another. As Sage experiences confusion, joy, fear, friendship, hesitation, and love, we too are reminded of times we felt those same emotions. Whether we are mentally and physically healthy or mentally and physically challenged we can relate to Sage's adventures and realize we all need and deserve acceptance, kindness, and a place in a loving family. Sage's story reinforces the idea that we are more alike than we are different and those similarities enable us to accept the differences with friendship and understanding. This book will be read and reread and shared with friends.   Mary Bonebrake, Retired Educator and Dog Owner - Casper, WY

For any child – or adult – who has ever felt or been ‘different’, this is definitely a ‘must read’ book. All readers will be caught up in the story of extraordinary adaptation and transmutation of the blindness many would merely see as a disability.  Though obviously written to appeal to children, this book nevertheless, can and will tug at the hearts of any person who loves or who has ever loved an animal. We feel Sage’s fear and confusion. We applaud her intelligence and her courage to adapt. We also, with Sage, feel thankful for ‘her people’, who love her, teach her, and nurture her spirit.  This book is a compellingly-written chronicle of the power of love and hope. I recommend it highly. And I’m not entirely sure that Sage didn’t TELL Ms. Irwin exactly what she wanted her to write!   Lyndalee A.
